You'll want to use something called the Compose Key. Good instructions on this site, but here's a quick installation summary:

Use xev to get the name of the key you want to use, e.g., Super_L
Try it out with xmodmap -e "keysym Super_L = Multi_key" (hint: capitalization is important!)
Put the xmodmap command in ~/.xmodmaprc for permanence.
